Lapis Lazuli

For six thousand years, lapis lazuli has been prized as the sky held close

The Discovery

Lapis lazuli carries its history in its name. "Lapis" comes from the Latin word for stone; "lazuli" traces back to the Persian lāzhward, meaning blue. The two travelled together through Old French and medieval Latin before settling into English as lapis lazuli: literally, blue stone.

It is, by a wide margin, the gemstone with the longest continuously worked source on Earth.

Extraction at Sar-i-Sang, in the Badakhshan region, is generally dated to the 7th millennium BCE, and the same mining district remains a primary source of fine material today. In 1271, the explorer Marco Polo documented the mines directly, one of the earliest Western written accounts of where lapis actually came from

Lapis appears in the Standard of Ur, a Mesopotamian artifact from around 2600 BCE, inlaid alongside shell and red limestone. It was carved into scarabs and set into funerary jewelry in ancient Egypt, including pieces recovered from Tutankhamun's tomb around 1323 BCE. Across these early civilizations, lapis moved along some of the earliest long-distance trade routes known to archaeology, prized wherever it arrived.

How It Was Seen

Across Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, lapis lazuli was consistently linked to royalty and to the divine. It was buried with rulers, carved for religious use, and traded across enormous distances at a time when very few materials moved that far at all.

The ancient Greeks gave it a name that translates roughly to "sapphire of the ancients," a piece of etymological trivia rather than a claim that the two stones are related.

Much of that association needs no explanation to see: the flecks of pyrite scattered through a piece of lapis genuinely resemble stars set against a night sky, a comparison the stone earns on its own.

What It Actually Is

Lapis lazuli is a rock, not a single mineral. It is an aggregate: mostly lazurite, the component responsible for the blue, bound together with calcite and flecked with pyrite. This is why lapis is opaque rather than transparent, and why "crystal" is not the right word for it: there is no single crystal structure here, only a mixture of minerals fused together.
