Garnet's name comes from the Latin granatum, or granatus — pomegranate — a reference to the way raw garnet crystals cluster and catch the light like the fruit's seeds. It's a documented etymology, not a marketing flourish, and it points straight to the stone's most useful fact: garnet isn't one gemstone. It's a supergroup of six related mineral species — pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular, andradite, and uvarovite — sharing a single crystal structure and diverging almost entirely in colour.
That structure gives garnet a genuinely worldwide footprint. Red garnet has been mined across India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Brazil, Myanmar, and the United States. Russia's Ural Mountains have historically produced demantoid, the green andradite variety prized for its fire. East Africa holds one of garnet's most specific, verifiable discovery stories: tsavorite, a vivid green grossular garnet, was first identified in Tanzania in 1967, then found in a larger deposit near Kenya's Tsavo National Park, after which it was named. Tiffany & Co. popularised it commercially through the 1970s, giving garnet's youngest variety a naming story nearly as tidy as tanzanite's.
Unlike tanzanite's single mountain range or morganite's single naming moment, garnet has no one discovery to point to. Its story is geographic breadth, not a single find — one crystal structure expressing itself across continents. And unlike most coloured stones, garnet is isotropic: it holds one steady colour from every angle, with none of the shift seen in pleochroic stones. What you see is what stays.
